Become a KMA Volunteer

Volunteering is the lifeblood of any prosperous community. Volunteers play a vital role in building strong communities that are able to run masajid, organizations, schools, social services, youth services, conferences, clean-up drives, blood banks, and the list goes on. According to Volunteer Canada, over 13 million Canadians contribute 2.1 billion hours of volunteering annually—imagine how different our country would look if that all went away. This is even truer for Islamic associations who barely have any paid staff.

Allah says in the Quran: “Help each other in righteousness and piety, and do not help each other in sin and aggression” [5:2]. Our Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: “The dearest to Allah is the one who is most beneficial to people. The dearest deed to Allah is bringing happiness to a Muslim, or dispelling a grief from him, or settling his debt, or feeding him while he is hungry. It is dearer to me to support my Muslim brother to satisfy need than to make one month I'tikaf in the mosque. Whoever controls his anger Allah will cover his faults. And whoever goes out with a Muslim till fulfilling his necessity, Allah will make his feet stable on the Day while feats slip [al-Tabrani].

As Muslims, our role is not just to engage in prayers. Islam encourages us to take on a broader role by working towards improving the communities we live in: feeding the hungry, visiting the sick, teaching people to read, helping people who have no where to go.

Why Volunteer?

Volunteering is extremely rewarding in so many aspects, be it social, spiritual or professional. If we volunteer for the sake of Allah, our actions will turn into His ‘Ibadah and will be rewarded in this world and the hereafter, insha’Allah. Let us remind ourselves of some of the key spiritual benefits of volunteering. Firstly, helping others will make us more thankful to Allah by reflecting on His blessings on us. Secondly, the act of volunteerism will reinforce the noble virtue of sincerity (Ikhlas) in us. Thirdly, volunteerism will bring about calmness in us and satisfaction to our souls.

We understand that our primary motivation for helping others should be our love for Allah but we can learn invaluable life long skills through our efforts as well. Also, for students, volunteering is an excellent way to build up a resume and gain a wide range of experience that can certainly help when it comes time to apply to college, university or internship (Note: High school volunteer hours are awarded at KMA). Volunteering provides an opportunity to groom some of the key aspects of our professional life as well like inter-personal and communication skills, organizational and managerial skills, networking skills

With all these spiritual and professional benefits in mind, we urge you to commit yourself to help others by volunteering and becoming the heart and soul of the community around you.

Our Vision

There is a strong need to establish an Islamic Center in Kanata. This Center will cater to the needs of the Muslim communities in Kanata, Stittsville, and Carp etc. It will also serve as a regional center for western suburbs of Ottawa providing a focal point for carrying out and coordinating various Islamic activities in Greater Ottawa area.

An Islamic Centre, which will include a mosque, a school and a community Hall, will form a multi-purpose institution serving the religious, social, cultural, educational and political needs of a Muslim community at the grass roots level. As a divine and democratic institution, it will have no parallel, either in the past or the contemporary philosophies. Clean in its environment, corporate in its character, constructive in its approach and creative in its essence, the Islamic Centre institution will be an outstanding contribution of Islam to human society.
